Smita Halder, MBChB, MRCP, MRes, PhD

Dr Smita Halder is an Associate Professor and a GI Specialist at McMaster University.

She was born in Manchester, UK, and obtained her medical degree from Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities. She completed her general medicine training in Edinburgh. After obtaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, she moved back to Manchester for her GI Specialist Registrar (GI residency) training. She was subsequently awarded a 4-year Medical Research Council Health Services and Epidemiology Fellowship to pursue a PhD. This award included a year’s training at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA. In 2008 she moved to Canada to pursue a 2-year post-doctoral clinical fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, to investigate the role of genetic and clinical factors in severe Crohn’s disease.

She was appointed to the Division of Gastroenterology at McMaster University in 2010, where she combines her clinical work with research and teaching commitments. Her research interests include the epidemiology of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and health services research.

She has developed as a leader in healthcare and was appointed as the Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee at Hamilton Health Sciences in June 2019. Smita is also a Certified Physician Development Coach, and her goal is to grow a coaching faculty in Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University.
